What is and ISP you might ask (but hopefully don’t need to)? Well, according to Wikipedia, an “Internet service provider (ISP) is an organization that provides services for accessing, using, or participating in the Internet.” So… we are referring to the company you pay for access to the internet. Here are some examples. At your home or business it is quite likely that you have one of the major ISP players – Comcast or Verizon. There are alternatives, however. The most popular of the alternatives these days is 4G Internet via your smartphone or hotspot device. People these days love their smartphones. They can do a heck of a lot on the internet and they often can tether (or broadcast) a wireless signal to share it’s 4G connection to other devices. If you use this sort of internet, your ISP would be your cell service provider, i.e. Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Net10, etc… But wait – there are quite a few other ways to get online.

There are large corporate networks with dedicated lines that we can’t easily define as having an ISP. You could be a student in the dorms or have an apartment that gives you internet – the provider of which you are unaware. This is ok too – just tell us all you know about it – is it fast? More options yet – there are a variety of DSL options out there like Windstream and Verizon, as well as a whole bunch more. Newer service technologies are popping up offering wireless internet transmission services provided by various companies. There are so many ways to reach the internet and someone along the way is getting paid to allow you to get there. Who’s Your ISP?
